Mid-Century Modern Flat in Torquay

Striking contrast between front and rear elevations, this development turns it back on the road, presenting a simple flat, staggered 3-storey facade on the front elevation. Contrasts dramatically with the rear elevation which comprises an irregular cluster of cubic forms set on a slope. The composition is harmonised by black horizontal fascia boards, which define the corners of solids and voids.

Designed by Eric Lyons for Span, Highsett 1 was completed in 1960. Scheme comprises 31 flats and 6 maisonettes. Particularly noted for its collegiate plan, demonstrating the maturity of Lyons work. Listed Grade II. Brick cross wall construction with concrete floors. Principal elevations are expressed in a simple colour palette, with abstract geometric compositions of strip windows, and broad bands of hanging tile which emphasise the horizontality of the form. Modernist flat roof with plain broad cornice band. Particularly elegant glazed communal entrance halls. Collegiate (courtyard) plan has entrances cut through 3 elevations, with upper storeys supported on slender pilotis which also serve to de-emphasise the mass of the built form.
